Far West is the land where great adventurers have always dreamed of living, with its cowboys, races, and emotions in every corner.

Stampida, located in the Far West area, is one of the most exciting attractions in PortAventura Park because, from the moment you get on it, you have no idea who will be the first to reach the end of the ride. Keep scrolling down to find out some of the main interesting facts about this roller coaster. 👇🏼😮

One of only a few dueling wooden coasters in the world

This ride, which has been with us since 1997, has a unique history indeed.

The Connery and Cranberry families, founders of Penitence, decided to build a roller coaster in Far West. In one of their constant duels, they managed to agree on a great idea: to create a racing circuit where two wagons would compete to reach the end of the track first. But without ever knowing in advance who the winner would be each time.

This ride undergoes annual maintenance by the best manufacturer of wooden roller coasters in the world, Great Coaster International. This is a job that cannot be undertaken by others, because the wood used to build this roller coaster is pressure-treated southern yellow pine, a special wood with high resistance to wear and tear.

When the ride was first opened there were different exit areas: the one that is still used and another with an Indian tipi located where the Hysteria in Boothill tent is now.

When you combine this with a kilometre of high-speed climbs and descents, when you see the dust rising as you go by… it’s impossible not to feel like a cowboy or cowgirl riding through the Far West with the urge to shout yee haw! at the top of your lungs.

First place for one, but excitement for all

This dueling wooden coaster has the option of operating in two modes to decide which wagon will arrive first, but at PortAventura World we prefer to maintain the excitement of not knowing who will arrive first and so both are launched at the same time.

So if you’re a person who can’t stand losing, not even at tiddlywinks, and you challenge a friend to a race, you will have to choose very wisely between red or blue, because only one of those trains will be the first to reach the finish line.

But, even if you’re not the race winner, the intense emotions you’ll feel during the ride will make you want to get on again as soon as you reach the station.

This attraction also reaches 70 km/h at several points, which, added to its curves, its ups and downs, its tunnels, and its rattling, means that there’s no way of knowing who will arrive first until the ride has actually finished.

Tomahawk, Stampida’s little sister at PortAventura World

Stampida is not our only wooden attraction. Its little sister, Tomahawk, is designed so that brave little adventurers can start to experience high speed. It rises to an impressive 14 metres and, with a 180-degree curve, this attraction meets Stampida on a ride where you can say hello to other passengers from the Far West as you rush by.
